Our youngest daughter leaves for college in a few short weeks She is thrilled and can't stop talking about all the new things she will learn and see in her new town and on her new adventure. We, while excited, are dreading the day that we have to drop her off, move her in and drive away. Where did the time go?
I know many of you have gone through or are going to go through the same thing. It is how life is supposed to happen. They are born, go to school, learn to drive and then move away to start their own life filled with all the lessons and love you shared with them.
What isn't supposed to happen is our child experiencing a medical or financial emergency while we are hours away. Unfortunately, life happens. Appendix get inflamed, bones break and accidents happen.
Most of us are unaware that once your child reaches the age of 18, you are no longer authorized to make medical or financial decisions for them. That means when your son or daughter is in the hospital you many need to go to court to be appointed to act on their behalf. That wastes precious time and energy that should be spent with your child.
Fortunately, there is a way to avoid this frustrating reality. By taking 30 minutes to put a Durable Power of Attorney (financial decisions) and an Advanced Medical Directive/HIPAA (medical decisions) in place, you can step in on behalf of your child when they are not able to do it themselves.
We will certainly be putting these documents in place with our daughter. We hope that we never have to use them but want to be prepared in case she really needs us.
